Characters Appeal To Audience (And Film Budgets)

Joe Pesci

Joe Pesci's character as 'Tommy' is very appealing to the audience when we see the title and cover of the film, we expect there to be violence. However, violence can be disturbing because it gives the film a bad rating. The violence Pesci uses is comical violence which gives the audience entertainment yet they feel guilty that someone has been shot. The way Pesci does this is by making a joke firstly and then kills them. This way, the audience like his character which gives the film a little more life.

Robert DeNiro
Robert DeNiro's character as 'Jimmy' shows the audience that DeNiro is in the film. The production team have diliberatly placed DeNiro at the centre of the DVD cover to make the film appealing to DeNiro fans, eventhought he isn't the main character. Tommy is the laid back type which the audience find boring as he isn't really doing anything, but as the film progresses, his attitude changes, more like into a very secretive gangster. Like Tommy, but without the comedy and less violence. People only find him appealing is because of his star rating in other films.

James Cagney
James Cagney's character was 'Rocky Sullivan'. Cagney's performance in AWDF was brilliant because the audience relate him to gangster-like roles. He is used to his tough guy characters.

Pat O'Brian

Pat O'Brian's character as 'Jerry'. He was found very appealing to the audience because of his representation to the society, like people wanted to be like him and find the right path, instead of Rocky and in the ending dying. His appeal was sending a message to viewers and not to get to ahead of yourselves.

Budgets

Goodfellas
Production Budget - $25 Million
Theatrical Performance - $46, 743,809

GoodFellas

As the film begins, Henry (played by Christopher Serrone) is a youngster. His family lives across the street from a taxi stand that is also a local mob headquarters. Admiring the criminals' wealth and clout in the community, Henry begins doing the odd job for them, parking their Cadillacs during card games, selling untaxed cigarettes out of the trunk of a car results in Henry's first arrest, during which he maintains his silence and doesn't say anything. Jimmy (played by Robert DeNiro) praises his silence and awards him with a generous amount of money, like he does with any person he knows. Money handed out just for the guy opening the door or just even having a conversation with him.

Cold brutality. Tommy (played by Joe Pesci) begins working with Jimmy as he comes infront of Henry. They both get along and become very close. But, owing to Pesci's homicidal temper, it emerges that his career outlook is also limited. All three work for local mob boss Paul Cicero (Paul Sorvino). Fated downfall. Generally, Goodfellas is concerned with Pesci and De Niro's climb up the mob ladder and its effects on Liotta, but Scorsese's rich tapestry is both broader in scope.

Awards

Pesci won an Oscar for Best Supporting Actor for his performance, and Goodfellas earned nominations for Best Picture, Best Director, Best Supporting Actress (Bracco), Best Editing, and Best Screenplay Based on Material from Another Medium.

Review For Angels With Dirty Faces

RATING -
8/10!

In my opinion, the film Angels with Dirty Faces was brilliant. The characters were given their appropriate roles as in James Cagney was the main pratagonists out of Pat O'brian and Humphrey Bogart. Cagney's ideal roles were tough guys as it gave him a chance to perform at pace. His acting was spot on but the high pitched voices didnt quite work for me. Maybe because its an old film but quite frankly was rather annoying. On the otherhand Jerry a.k.a Father Connelly was, in my view, a good character but was kind of laid-back and didn't really see much of the screen. The opening, which shows Rocky's and Jerry's childhood was superbly put together but as the film progressed, it slowly deteriorated and the ending wasn't up to standards. It is as if they killed off Rocky so quick that they wanted to get it done and out of the way. But nonetheless, a great film to watch. Just a few hiccups on the way, like the black and white picture which should be made into colour to give the film depth and a bit more of a 'WOW' factor.

Hollywood Industry - Film Making

Hollywood, based in L.A, Califonia has become the centre of industrial film making because of its vast area to work with. As Hollywood is based in America, the film team have many settings to use. They have buildings and offices on one side and for action/adventure shots they have a wide area of desert.
Also Hollywood have all the main stars, actors and actresses from Robert Di Niro to Judy Dench. Many of the young stars are going to be the centre of films in due course.
Not to forget about the directors and film editors. Big names like Steven Spielsberg, Martin Scorcese and David Lynch.

Americas way of making films is completely different to British Cinema as the US have the weather on their side because all shots need the perfect weather, Britain haven't got that and regularly have to pause filming just because its meant to sunny in the shot instead of raining.

Hollywood Cinema was founded by H.J.Whitley. He has been given an alternate name of 'The Father Of Hollywood'.
Filmmaking in the greater Los Angeles area preceded the establishment of filmmaking in Hollywood. The Biograph Company filmed the short film A Daring Hold-Up in Southern California in Los Angeles in 1906. The first studio in the Los Angeles area was established by the Selig Polyscope Company in Edendale, with construction beginning in August 1909.

The first studio in Hollywood was established by the New Jersey based Centaur Co, which wanted to make western films in California. They rented an unused roadhouse and converted it into a movie studio in 1911, calling it Nestor Studio after the name of the western branch of their company. The facility later became the Hollywood Film Laboratory, which is now called the Hollywood Digital Laboratory. The first feature film made specifically in a Hollywood studio, in 1914, was The Squaw Man. By 1915, the majority of American films were being produced in the LA.

Four major film companies in Hollywood:
-Paramount
-Warner Bros
-RKO
-Columbia

There were also several minor companies and rental studios which had there part in the Hollywood area.
